About Lakeside for Children
Lakeside for Children has cared for vulnerable boys and girls in Kalamazoo for more than 100 years. Founded in a farmhouse in 1907, Lakeside now cares for over 170 abused and neglected students each year—adjudicated into the juvenile justice system or court-ordered out of their homes for their own safety. Boys and girls (ages 12-17) live and attend school year-round on Lakeside’s 8 building, 48-acre campus.
For most students—and for society in general—Lakeside is the last best hope to provide these young people with the educational tools and social skills they need to be successful in school and in life. Few places in the state of Michigan treat and care for students with these needs. With the support of 125 trained and dedicated teachers, therapists, and youth counselors, Lakeside helps students learn to identify and manage their own recovery. We have an excellent reputation here in Michigan and across the country. The student body has doubled in the past five years and currently Lakeside averages a 20-student waiting list.
